Id Tech 5
During Apple CEO Steve Job's address at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference 2007 today, id Software co-founder John Carmack unexpectedly showed the first of the company's new game technology, referred to as id Tech 5. Id also sent out an id Tech 5 press release.
The technology demo shown
The new technology was shown in form of a highly detailed desert valley environment, surprisingly id choose a racing game theme with banners, flags, spectator, and vehicles showing off the new engine. The scene was said to use over 20GB of unique textures.
The end of tiling textures?
The MegaTexture feature demonstrated in Enemy Territory: Quake Wars was one of the tidbits and main focuses of the demonstration:
"They can go in and look at the world and, say, change the color of the mountaintop, or carve their name into the rock," said Carmack. "They can change as much as they want on surfaces with no impact on the game."
Carmack also mentioned that the demo was put together in just 10 days.
When will we see more of Id Tech 5?
"We're going to be showing on a Mac, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 at E3. We'll have another Mac announcement at E3." - John Carmack
Interesting, could this new announcement be the new Wolfenstein game, which has been said to run on the new technology, or perhaps the brand new IP, developed in-house by id Software?
