Activision has confirmed that Soldier of Fortune: Pay Back is in development. The next episode of Raven Software's first person shooter is headed to PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and will be released November 7, 2007, according to retailer listings. The release date should be taken with a grain of salt prior to official publisher confirmation though.
The first Soldier of Fortune was developed by Raven Software and released for PC in early 2000. It got known for it's gory GHOUL gib-rendering system, which allowed players to blow of body parts of the enemies.
The sequel, Solider of Fortune II: Double Helix followed in 2002 and featured an enhanced version of the GHOUL rendering system, called GHOUL 2.0. Initially released on PC, with an 2003 Xbox edition ported by Gratuitous Games following.
Soldier of Fortune 3 (now known as Soldier of Fortune: Pay Back) has been rumored to be developed with the Doom 3 engine. While nothing is officially known, we can expect a new level of the series trademark gore rendering and realistic violence in the long awaited SOF 3.
