The history of World of Warcraft
Blizzard Entertainments successful MMORPG, World of Warcraft hit 9 million subscribers in July 2007, with the latest expansion, The Burning crusade still awaiting launch in China.
The Burning Crusade launched in January in the US, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia, sold over 2.4 million copies worldwide the first 24 hours and over 3.5 million copies the first month.
Determined to take its tremendously popular franchise even further, a new add-on, entitled Wrath of the Lich King was announced.
The Warcraft movie concept
Blizzard has been struggling hard to come up with a concept good enough for a World of warcraft movie. It's not an easy task, the expectations are astronomical. But, now, that concept is finally coming together.
Warcraft CG movie
Blizzard's animation team has been praised for their fantastic work with cut-scenes and promotion movies, so many people may be disheartened with the fact that the movie wont be an animated CG movie. The movie will be heavily influenced by cut-scenes seen in Warcraft 3 and World of Warcraft though. There has even been talk about involving the animators in the live action movie somehow, but yet to be decided, since Blizzard is focusing on the story.
Movie studio
Legendary Pictures achieved worldwide recognition with recent blockbusters Batman Begins, Superman Returns, 300 and other recent movies. Blizzard stated they are extremely happy about their decision to cooperate with the Legendary Pictures film studio.
And the film will be released...
Legendary Pictures' chief creative officer Jon Jashni confirmed that a World of Warcraft movie script is under way and that both Blizzard and Legendary hope to have a trailer and actual movie material by next year. The targeted year for the launching of the movie is sometime 2009. The movie budget is going to be around $100 million dollars, so it's a pretty serious project.
The story
It was a long time ago...
The story takes place about a year before World of Warcraft begins, so you'll be placed in a world with familiar races and characters. Names like Thrall and Jaina Proudmoore were mentioned at Blizzcon as examples of characters you might se in the movie.The storyline will be told mainly through the Alliance perspective and, to some peoples dismay, not from the Hordes point of view.
The movie script is being written from scratch, although Blizzard's Chris Metzen mentioned they work close with Legendary to create a story by merging plots from the different Warcraft games into a unique new story. The initial idea was to use the outline story of the earlier Warcraft games, like Warcraft: Orcs & Humans and Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness, and translate that into a movie, but the idea was dropped since a story on conflicts between humans and orcs has already been seen in the recent Lord of the Rings movie trilogy. |
