How to Configure Custom Resolutions in Windows

By Fredrik Olsson 05-10-17 03:46

You can add your own resolutions by editing your video driver-files, but a much easier way is to get custom resolutions is letting a program handle it. In this tutorial we will use PowerStrip.

PowerStrip
A very nice program used for setting your own screen refresh rates and fix windows XP's 60hz bug in games is PowerStrip.
There is a free trial of Powerstrip at their site. We will now go through how to get custom resolutions using Powerstrip.

1) Install PowerStrip
Download Powerstrip Shareware version here, Install it & Restart.

2) Make PowerStrip start with windows XP
"Click" the Little Powerstrip icon in the Windows XP tray.
Select "Options..." -> "Preferences..." The following screen will appear...

3) Autoload
At the top left, find the checkbox for "Auto load with Windows", and check it. Click "OK".

4) Set your Custom resolutions
Try a new display setting:
Click the Powerstrip tray icon and select "Display Profiles" -> "Configure".
Select the "Advanced timing options" button.
Select the "Custom Resolutions" button.

You will see this:

In the list of resolutions to the right, you can select a resolution you want to add. You can also add your very own resolution by clicking "user defined" and typing in the resolution.

Here is a list of common widescreen and 4:3 resolutions to help you find the resolution you want.

5) Add custom resolution
When you've selected resolution, Click the "Add new Resolution" button.

A screen usually appears the first time you use a custom resolution. You can either click "restart" now or continue and add more resolutions by clicking the "continue" button. When finished adding resolutions you want to try using, click "Restart".

6) Restart
After restarting Windows, your computer will have the original resolution you were using, not the newly added resolutions.

You are now ready to try the new resolution.
Click the Powerstrip tray icon and select "Display Profiles" -> "Configure".
Use the "Resolution" Slider to find your new custom resolution and click "OK".

If you get a picture - Congratulations, You are done!

If the monitor goes black, either your monitor or graphics card dont support the resolution., just wait for PowerStrip to reset to the default resolution or press "ESC".

Black screen? - Reset Windows resolution
If things get messy and you cant switch back to a viewable resolution:
-restart windows
-press F8 when booting and select "fail safe mode" -when windows XP has started, right click the desktop and change to another resolution, for example 800x600.
